Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) plc (LSE:EOG) has secured a 12-month extension to the first exploration sub-period of its EG-08 production sharing contract (PSC) in Equatorial Guinea, extending the deadline to 4 October 2027.
The AIM-listed oil and gas exploration company said the extension was approved by Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development, which confirmed that the contractor had fulfilled its obligations under the agreement to date.
The additional time will allow Europa and its partners to continue negotiations over a proposed farm-out agreement with Fuhai and progress preparations for the Barracuda exploration well, which is currently expected to be drilled during the first half of 2027.
Europa estimates that the EG-08 licence contains approximately 2.2 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gross prospective gas resources, including an estimated 878 billion cubic feet (BCF) associated with the Barracuda prospect.
EG-08 Exploration Deadline Extended to October 2027
The extension moves the end of the first exploration sub-period under Phase 1 of the EG-08 production sharing contract to 4 October 2027.
Europa said the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mining Development had confirmed that the contractor had met its contractual obligations to date.
The decision allows exploration activities to continue under the existing PSC framework while the company and its partners advance their plans for the licence.
The extension provides additional time for commercial arrangements and operational preparations associated with the proposed Barracuda drilling programme.
The announcement does not indicate any changes to the licence’s prospective resource estimates or specify additional exploration commitments arising from the extension.
Barracuda Exploration Well Targeted for First Half of 2027
Europa and its partners are preparing to drill the Barracuda exploration well within the EG-08 licence area.
The company currently expects drilling to take place during the first half of 2027, although the programme remains subject to the completion of relevant preparations and commercial arrangements.
Barracuda is estimated by Europa to contain 878 BCF of gross prospective gas resources.
The proposed well is intended to investigate the presence of hydrocarbons within the prospect and provide geological information relevant to its resource potential.
The prospective resource estimate represents an assessment of potentially recoverable gas volumes from an undrilled prospect rather than confirmed reserves.
Actual hydrocarbon volumes, if discovered, will depend on the results of drilling and subsequent technical evaluation.
Europa Continues Farm-Out Discussions With Fuhai
The licence extension also provides additional time for Europa and its partners to finalise a proposed farm-out agreement with Fuhai.
A farm-out arrangement typically involves the transfer of an interest in an exploration asset to another participant in exchange for agreed commercial consideration or funding commitments.
Europa has identified the completion of the proposed agreement as part of its preparations for advancing exploration at EG-08.
The company has not disclosed final commercial terms or confirmed that the proposed transaction has been completed.
The discussions are taking place alongside preparations for the Barracuda well, with Europa continuing to work with its project partners, including state-owned GEPetrol.
EG-08 Contains Estimated 2.2 TCF of Gross Prospective Gas Resources
Europa’s internal assessment attributes approximately 2.2 TCF of gross prospective gas resources to the EG-08 licence.
Within that total, the Barracuda prospect accounts for an estimated 878 BCF.
These figures represent prospective resources rather than discovered gas volumes or commercially recoverable reserves.
The planned exploration well will provide information to help assess the presence and extent of gas within the Barracuda structure.
Further exploration, appraisal and technical work would be required before any discovery could be evaluated for potential commercial development.
The EG-08 project forms part of Europa’s wider portfolio of upstream oil and gas interests across West Africa, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
