US equity futures edged higher on Wednesday as markets prepared for quarterly results from major technology companies and assessed developments involving SpaceX, Tesla, Anthropic and Nvidia. Investors also monitored oil prices and geopolitical developments in the Middle East, alongside concerns about financing for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
S&P 500 futures increased 0.2%, or 13 points, by 03:01 ET (07:01 GMT), while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.5%, equivalent to 148 points. Dow Jones futures showed little movement.
The gains followed a mixed session on Wall Street on Tuesday, when the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average finished higher but the Nasdaq Composite closed marginally lower.
Oil prices remained volatile following unconfirmed reports that Qatar and Pakistan had presented a proposal to restart negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict involving Iran.
Brent crude initially declined from approximately $112 to $106 per barrel before recovering. The movement coincided with an improvement in equity market sentiment following recent concerns about AI-related investment and corporate borrowing costs.
“The relief from energy that played out late in the European session meant equities rallied as investors overcame some of their earlier AI jitters,” Deutsche Bank analysts wrote.
Brent later traded around $110 per barrel after reports emerged of comments attributed to Iran’s president concerning the possibility of renewed US military action.
Technology shares remained relatively subdued. A semiconductor sector index fell 0.29%, although it recovered from steeper losses earlier in the session. CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), which provides cloud infrastructure for AI applications, also recovered.
Musk Confirms Review of Potential SpaceX-Tesla Combination
Elon Musk said committees representing SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) have begun examining a possible merger.
The announcement came during an investor call following SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings report.
Musk said the committees had not agreed on “the terms of any transaction” and cautioned that there was “no guarantee” a deal would be completed.
He nevertheless said there was “a lot of merit” to the proposed combination. Musk is chief executive of both companies but does not sit on either committee.
Shares of SpaceX and Tesla rose during extended trading following the remarks.
A merger would combine SpaceX’s commercial launch and satellite operations with Tesla’s electric vehicle manufacturing and technology businesses. The companies have not announced a proposed transaction structure, valuation or completion timetable.
SpaceX reported quarterly revenue of $14.6 billion, more than 160% above the comparable period last year and ahead of market expectations.
Profit totalled $4.4 billion, while capital expenditure reached $19.6 billion.
The figures were included in SpaceX’s second quarterly financial report since its stock market debut earlier this year.
Tesla is due to release its own quarterly earnings after Wednesday’s closing bell.
Anthropic Financial Disclosures Highlight Customer Concentration and Computing Requirements
Anthropic (NASDAQ:ANTP), the developer of Claude AI, reported first-half revenue of $16.3 billion, according to media coverage of disclosures associated with a possible initial public offering.
The reported figures showed that two customers accounted for approximately 20% of the company’s revenue during the six-month period.
Anthropic warned that a “significant portion” of its revenue would continue to come from a “limited” number of customers for the foreseeable future.
The disclosures also addressed the company’s ability to obtain sufficient computing capacity to support its AI models as demand and development requirements increase.
Anthropic reported a net loss exceeding $80 billion, compared with a loss of $13 billion in the previous year. The increase was largely associated with an accounting adjustment.
Other identified risks included potential legal exposure connected with the use of AI systems, including cybersecurity-related incidents.
Media reports indicated that Anthropic could seek a valuation of approximately $2 trillion in a future IPO. The company has not confirmed a final valuation or listing date.
Meta Quarterly Results in Focus as AI Capital Spending Expands
Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) will report quarterly earnings after the US market closes on Wednesday, providing investors with an update on its financial performance and investment plans.
The company has continued developing its AI products, including the Muse model introduced in September.
According to the reported information, Muse attracted millions of downloads following its launch. Its applications include travel planning assistance and tools designed for small businesses.
Meta has also released an open-weight version of Muse Spark intended for coding-related tasks.
The company’s results arrive as major technology groups expand spending on AI computing infrastructure, including advanced chips and data centres.
These investments have become a central issue for equity investors, particularly as companies increase their capital commitments while the timing of future returns remains uncertain.
Meta’s earnings release and management commentary are expected to provide updated guidance on capital expenditure and the commercial development of its AI services.
Nvidia Linked to Further Funding for Australian AI Cloud Company
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) is reportedly considering an additional investment worth hundreds of millions of dollars in Australian AI infrastructure provider Firmus Grid.
The Information reported that discussions were taking place after Firmus abandoned its planned initial public offering in Australia.
Nvidia already holds an ownership interest in Firmus and has made investments in other AI cloud infrastructure companies.
Firmus cancelled its proposed listing earlier this month, citing financial market volatility and concluding that proceeding would not serve shareholders’ interests under the prevailing conditions.
The company had previously considered an IPO at a valuation exceeding $30 billion, which would have ranked among Australia’s largest stock market offerings.
No agreement or final investment amount has been announced.
The developments involving SpaceX, Tesla, Anthropic, Meta and Nvidia place corporate financing and AI investment plans among the principal company-specific themes for Wednesday’s US trading session, alongside quarterly earnings and movements in energy markets.
