US equity futures indicated a positive start to Wednesday’s trading session, with investors responding to corporate earnings announcements and preparing for further financial updates from some of the country’s largest technology companies.
The anticipated advance followed two sessions of gains in parts of the US market, although Tuesday’s trading ended with a mixed performance among the major indices.
Technology-related stocks were expected to attract attention at the opening bell following substantial pre-market movements in several companies.
SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) gained 8.8% before the market opened after reporting third-quarter earnings above analysts’ expectations and a substantial year-on-year increase in revenue.
The company also attracted attention after Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) had formed independent special committees to consider a possible merger.
The announcement indicated that the companies were examining the potential transaction, although no agreement or final decision had been disclosed.
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) recorded an even larger pre-market increase of 12.2% after raising its revenue forecast for the first quarter of its fiscal year.
The server manufacturer’s updated outlook contributed to movements in shares associated with data centre infrastructure and artificial intelligence computing.
Elsewhere, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) declined 6.8% in pre-market dealings despite reporting third-quarter earnings above market estimates.
The decline followed revenue guidance that fell short of analysts’ expectations, illustrating the importance investors were placing on companies’ forward-looking forecasts.
Telecommunications group AT&T (NYSE:T) also traded lower, falling 5% even though its latest quarterly results exceeded expectations for both revenue and earnings.
Attention was expected to shift towards Tesla, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and IBM (NYSE:IBM), with all three companies scheduled to release their financial results after Wednesday’s closing bell.
The forthcoming announcements could provide further information about corporate spending, technology demand and business conditions across several industries.
Tuesday’s session had produced gains for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500, while the Nasdaq Composite ended marginally lower.
The Dow climbed 529.85 points, or 1%, to 52,495.88, reaching its highest closing level in more than a month.
The S&P 500 increased by 21.84 points, equivalent to 0.3%, to finish at 7,712.57. The Nasdaq Composite edged down 6.07 points, or less than 0.1%, to 26,424.82.
Shares in 3M (NYSE:MMM) contributed to the Dow’s advance, rising 6% after the industrial group announced third-quarter earnings above forecasts and increased its full-year profit outlook.
Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN), Merck (NYSE:MRK) and UnitedHealth (NYSE:UNH) were among the other Dow constituents recording gains.
Energy markets also influenced Tuesday’s trading.
US crude oil futures reversed an earlier increase and moved substantially lower following a media report suggesting that diplomatic negotiations could help reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that negotiators representing Qatar and Pakistan had proposed a compromise intended to end the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Citing an unnamed source, the publication indicated that an announcement concerning a possible halt to the escalation could emerge during the week.
The report remained unconfirmed by both the US and Iranian governments.
The decline in crude oil prices coincided with improved demand for equities, although uncertainty surrounding the conflict remained a consideration for investors.
Several market sectors also recorded notable advances during Tuesday’s session.
Pharmaceutical shares gained, lifting the NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical Index by 2.8% to its highest closing level in two months.
Housing-related stocks also moved higher, with the Philadelphia Housing Sector Index advancing 2.6%.
Biotechnology, healthcare and airline companies participated in the broader gains, alongside most other major industry groups.
Wednesday’s trading is expected to be influenced by further corporate earnings announcements, with the reports from Tesla, Meta Platforms and IBM among the principal events on the calendar.
Investors will also continue monitoring developments in energy markets and the US-Iran conflict as they assess the outlook for equities.
