European Shares Little Changed as Investors Await US Technology Earnings: DAX, CAC, FTSE100

Paris Bourse

European stock markets traded close to unchanged levels on Wednesday, following two sessions of volatility, as investors assessed corporate earnings, political developments in France and forthcoming financial results from major US technology companies.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index was broadly flat at 638 points, after fluctuating during the previous session. The benchmark had fallen by as much as 1% before recovering most of its losses to close near unchanged levels.

In London, the FTSE 100 declined 0.2% after UK data showed that annual consumer price inflation had accelerated to 3.5% in September, exceeding market expectations.

France’s CAC 40 also fell 0.2%, while Germany’s DAX remained broadly unchanged.

Among individual stocks, EssilorLuxottica (EU:EL) gained 11.2% after the eyewear manufacturer, which owns the Ray-Ban brand, reported third-quarter revenue above analysts’ consensus estimates.

The company’s results provided support to consumer discretionary shares, while broader European market performance remained mixed.

Political and social developments in France continued to influence market sentiment. Civil unrest and the introduction of mandatory nighttime curfews in Paris and Nice added to concerns surrounding the country’s political and fiscal situation.

French government bond yields and credit default swap spreads increased amid these developments, reflecting changes in the pricing of sovereign credit risk.

Investors were also assessing expectations for the European third-quarter earnings season.

According to Reuters, earnings among STOXX 600 companies are forecast to increase 20.7% year on year, compared with growth of 24.0% recorded in the second quarter.

More than half of the index’s total market capitalisation is represented by companies scheduled to publish quarterly financial updates over the next two weeks.

These announcements will provide additional information on corporate profitability and business conditions across European sectors.

European Technology Shares Advance Ahead of Meta and Tesla Results

European semiconductor and technology stocks recorded modest gains as investors awaited quarterly financial reports from major US technology companies.

BE Semiconductor (EU:BESI), ASM International (EU:ASM), ASML (EU:ASML) and STMicroelectronics (BIT:STMMI) each advanced by more than 1% during the session.

The increases followed declines across global technology shares during the previous week, when investors reassessed valuations and financing requirements associated with artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Attention turned to quarterly results from Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), scheduled for release later on Wednesday.

Investors were particularly focused on company spending plans, including capital expenditure associated with artificial intelligence and related computing infrastructure.

Recent market discussions have centred on the scale of investment required to develop AI capabilities, the use of corporate debt financing and the timing of potential financial returns from these projects.

Management commentary accompanying the forthcoming US earnings announcements is expected to provide further information on investment plans and spending expectations.

European equities therefore remained broadly stable during Wednesday’s session, with individual company results supporting selected stocks while political developments, inflation data and upcoming US technology earnings continued to influence trading.
