US stock index futures moved higher on Wednesday as markets responded to the Democratic Party’s victory in the congressional midterm elections and a stronger-than-expected growth outlook from Advanced Micro Devices.
The election outcome gives Democrats control of the House of Representatives and Senate, potentially reshaping legislative priorities during the remainder of President Donald Trump’s second term.
Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) rallied more than 7% in extended trading after outlining substantial revenue growth expectations for 2027, supported by expanding demand for artificial intelligence processors.
Investors were also monitoring upcoming US services activity data and renewed uncertainty surrounding negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
US Equity Futures Point to Positive Opening
Futures linked to Wall Street’s main benchmarks traded higher during Wednesday’s early session.
At 03:37 ET (08:37 GMT), S&P 500 futures were up 15 points, or 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures gained 64 points, also representing a 0.2% increase.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures climbed 237 points, equivalent to 0.5%.
The positive movement followed a session in which the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite advanced, although the Dow Jones ended lower.
Earlier optimism about a possible diplomatic resolution to the conflict with Iran had supported equities and contributed to weaker crude oil prices.
However, concerns about geopolitical risks and the scale of debt-financed investment in AI infrastructure continued to influence sentiment.
Recent economic figures offered some support, with US job vacancies rising to a four-month high and factory orders growing more strongly than anticipated.
Democratic Election Gains Reshape Washington’s Political Outlook
Democrats secured majorities in both chambers of Congress following Tuesday’s midterm vote, delivering a significant political setback to President Trump’s Republican Party.
The outcome reflected voter concerns over affordability, the war involving Iran and the potential economic disruption associated with artificial intelligence.
Democratic candidates also performed strongly in several areas traditionally considered Republican strongholds.
The party’s new congressional majorities will take effect in January, providing Democrats with greater control over legislative priorities and government oversight.
Nevertheless, the president will retain the ability to veto legislation passed by Congress, potentially limiting the scope of policy changes without White House support.
Investors Assess Potential Restrictions on AI Investment
One of the immediate questions for financial markets is whether Democratic control of Congress could result in tighter oversight of artificial intelligence development.
The rapid expansion of data centres, potential employment displacement and the financial commitments required to build AI infrastructure have become increasingly prominent political issues.
Concerns about potential restrictions briefly pressured technology stocks in Asia and US equity futures overnight.
Those declines subsequently eased as investors reconsidered the timing and potential impact of legislative changes.
ING analysts linked the initial market reaction to speculation that Democratic lawmakers could slow the pace of AI capital spending.
The bank also suggested that the recovery reflected the delay until January before the new Congress assumes office.
For technology companies, the eventual effect will depend on the scope of any regulatory proposals and whether they can secure sufficient political support.
AMD Rallies as 2027 Revenue Growth Forecast Exceeds Expectations
Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) shares surged more than 7% after the closing bell as the company presented an upbeat outlook for its data centre business.
Chief Executive Lisa Su indicated that AMD expects overall revenue to increase by more than 80% in 2027.
That projection exceeded analysts’ expectations of approximately 77% growth, according to market estimates cited by Reuters.
Demand for processors supporting artificial intelligence workloads is expected to drive much of the expansion.
Su indicated that data centre chips would account for approximately 80% of AMD’s total sales, making them the company’s main contributor to future revenue and earnings growth.
The announcement also encouraged buying in other semiconductor companies.
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) recorded gains during extended trading as investors reassessed demand prospects across the AI chip industry.
AMD Earnings Reflect Cost of Strategic Chip Agreements
Despite its strong outlook, AMD reported a substantial non-cash charge affecting third-quarter profitability.
The charge, exceeding $1 billion, was associated with agreements involving OpenAI and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META).
Under the arrangements, AMD offered warrants allowing the technology companies to acquire future equity stakes in exchange for commitments to purchase its processors.
The agreements are intended to support the company’s expansion in the competitive market for AI computing hardware.
Investors will also receive additional information about semiconductor industry demand when Arm Holdings (NASDAQ:ARM) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) release their quarterly earnings on Wednesday.
Their results could provide further insight into spending trends across computing, mobile devices and semiconductor markets.
ISM Services Report Expected to Show Continued Expansion
US economic data will provide another important focus for investors during Wednesday’s session.
The Institute for Supply Management is scheduled to publish its latest assessment of activity in the services sector.
Economists expect the non-manufacturing purchasing managers’ index to decline marginally to 54.8 in October from 54.9 the previous month.
A reading above 50 indicates expansion, suggesting continued growth in a sector responsible for more than two-thirds of US economic activity.
The report will be closely watched for indications of demand strength and potential inflation pressures.
Earlier manufacturing figures showed improving activity supported by domestic demand, although elevated prices continued to highlight cost pressures affecting producers.
Crude Oil Gains as Washington’s Iran Strategy Remains Unclear
Oil futures rose on Wednesday as the US election results added another consideration to the outlook for American policy in the Middle East.
At 01:57 ET (06:57 GMT), Brent crude futures for January delivery increased 0.6% to $104.20 per barrel.
West Texas Intermediate futures gained 0.5% to $96.59 per barrel.
The increases came amid uncertainty over whether Washington would resume military operations against Iran or pursue a diplomatic settlement.
Earlier in the week, American forces struck Iranian air defence installations on Qeshm Island, close to the Strait of Hormuz.
US officials characterised the strikes as defensive actions responding to threats against commercial vessels.
President Trump subsequently stated that additional strikes were not planned in the immediate future.
The contrasting signals have left traders uncertain about the likely direction of US military and diplomatic policy.
Iran and US Remain Apart Despite Mediation Efforts
Diplomatic negotiations have continued, but Washington and Tehran have yet to reach an agreement on measures intended to reduce tensions.
Bloomberg reported, citing a diplomat familiar with the matter, that both governments were examining proposals from mediators designed to prevent a renewed escalation of the conflict.
Qatar has increased its involvement in the negotiations, with proposals continuing to move between the two sides.
Iran has nevertheless indicated that the US response to its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was unsatisfactory.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters that the positions of the two countries remained significantly apart.
The unresolved dispute continues to create uncertainty for international shipping and energy supplies passing through the Persian Gulf.
What Could Influence Markets Next
The direction of US equities will depend partly on how investors interpret the implications of Democratic control of Congress for technology regulation, public spending and foreign policy.
AMD’s outlook has reinforced expectations for strong demand for AI processors, although concerns remain about the scale and sustainability of infrastructure investment.
Additional semiconductor earnings and the ISM services report could provide further evidence about corporate spending and broader economic conditions.
Oil markets will also remain sensitive to diplomatic developments involving Iran and any changes affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Together, these factors are likely to shape investor sentiment as markets adjust to the new political landscape in Washington.
