US Stocks Set for Muted Open as Inflation Report and Bank Earnings Approach: Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq, Futures

Nasdaq sign on a tall building

US stock markets appeared set for a subdued opening on Monday, with major index futures showing little movement as investors awaited inflation figures and a series of quarterly earnings announcements from leading financial institutions.

The cautious outlook followed Friday’s recovery, when Wall Street’s main benchmarks advanced after the previous session’s declines.

Attention is turning towards Wednesday’s consumer price inflation report from the US Labor Department, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision.

Economists forecast that annual consumer price inflation increased to 3.6% in September from 3.4% in August, suggesting that price pressures may have strengthened during the month.

The report will follow last month’s quarter-point interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve.

CME Group’s FedWatch Tool currently indicates an 80.6% probability that policymakers will leave borrowing costs unchanged at their next meeting.

An inflation reading above market expectations could prompt investors to reassess the likelihood of further monetary tightening, while softer figures may support expectations that rates will remain steady.

With the inflation report approaching, traders may be reluctant to establish substantial new positions during Monday’s session.

Major US Banks Prepare to Report Quarterly Earnings

Corporate earnings will provide another important test for investor sentiment as the latest reporting season gathers momentum.

Citigroup (NYSE:C), JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) and Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) are scheduled to release their quarterly results this week.

The announcements will offer investors an opportunity to assess the financial sector’s performance amid changing interest rates and broader economic uncertainty.

Particular attention is likely to focus on lending trends, credit quality, consumer finances and management forecasts for the coming quarters.

Stronger-than-expected earnings could provide additional support for equities, while disappointing results or cautious guidance may create further volatility.

Expectations of robust corporate profitability were among the factors that may have encouraged buying during Friday’s session.

Wall Street Ends Previous Week With Broad Gains

The major US indices recovered on Friday after declining during Thursday’s trading session.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 423.31 points, or 0.8%, to 51,654.95.

The Nasdaq Composite gained 172.83 points, equivalent to 0.6%, closing at 27,366.17, while the S&P 500 rose 46.18 points, also 0.6%, to 7,811.54.

The gains helped all three benchmarks finish the week higher.

The S&P 500 recorded the strongest weekly performance, advancing 1.2%. The Dow gained 0.9%, while the Nasdaq increased 0.6%.

Technology-related optimism remained an important source of support, particularly among companies associated with artificial intelligence.

Investors continued to show interest in the sector despite reports that OpenAI’s annualised revenue had fallen short of certain estimates.

According to CNBC, a person familiar with the situation said a higher revenue figure widely reported late last month included gross revenue generated by OpenAI’s partners.

The distinction raised questions about how the company’s financial performance had been presented, although it did not prevent renewed buying interest in technology shares.

Gold Miners and Software Companies Outperform

Several sectors recorded substantial advances during Friday’s recovery.

Gold mining companies benefited from rising precious metal prices, lifting the NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index by 2.9%.

The increase continued the benchmark’s rebound after it reached a two-month closing low on Wednesday.

Software and networking stocks also performed strongly, with the Dow Jones U.S. Software Index and NYSE Arca Networking Index each rising 2.7%.

Biotechnology, healthcare and commercial real estate shares contributed additional gains to the broader market.

Telecommunications stocks, however, moved sharply lower following an announcement from SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX).

The company disclosed an agreement to acquire a nationwide portfolio of low-band spectrum licences, prompting concerns that increased competition could affect established telecommunications operators.

The NYSE Arca North American Telecom Index declined 4% following the announcement.

Looking ahead, the combination of inflation data, monetary policy uncertainty and major corporate earnings could lead to uneven trading conditions.

Investors will be watching whether the latest economic figures support current interest rate expectations and whether corporate results justify the recent strength in US equities.
