J D Wetherspoon plc (LSE:JDW) reported an 8.2% increase in like-for-like sales during the first 14 weeks of its financial year, supported by strong bar and food trading, while confirming that its profit outlook remains in line with market expectations after adjusting for the 53-week reporting period.
The UK pub operator recorded total sales growth of 9.1% for the period ended 1 November 2026, continuing to outperform the wider hospitality market.
Trading Performance and Sales Growth
Like-for-like sales increased 8.2% during the first 14 weeks of the financial year compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
Bar sales rose 9.4%, while food sales increased 6.8%. Revenue from slot and fruit machines grew 7.1%, although hotel room sales declined 1.4%.
Wetherspoon reported like-for-like sales growth of 8.6% during the first nine weeks of the quarter, followed by slightly slower growth of 7.5% over the subsequent five weeks.
Total sales increased 9.1% year-to-date.
Wetherspoon Continues to Outperform Hospitality Sector
The company highlighted its continued outperformance against the NIQ RSM Hospitality Business Tracker, which measures monthly like-for-like sales across participating pub and restaurant businesses.
In September 2026, Wetherspoon recorded like-for-like sales growth of 9.9%, compared with the industry tracker average of 2.7%.
The company has now outperformed the tracker for 49 consecutive months.
The figures indicate that Wetherspoon continues to achieve stronger sales growth than the broader group of hospitality operators included in the survey.
Pub Openings and Estate Expansion
Wetherspoon opened six managed pubs during the financial year to date, excluding franchise locations.
The new sites are located at Manchester Airport Terminal 2, Heathrow Airport Terminal 2, Crewe in Cheshire, Ferndown in Dorset, Dibden Purlieu in Hampshire and Kempston in Bedfordshire.
The company also sold one pub during the period, bringing its managed trading estate to 797 locations.
Management expects a further five to ten managed pub openings during the current financial year.
Franchise Network Continues to Grow
Wetherspoon reported that its franchise estate has reached 25 pubs, including two openings since the beginning of the financial year.
The company anticipates an additional ten to fifteen franchised openings during the remainder of the year.
The expansion of both managed and franchised operations forms part of Wetherspoon’s ongoing development of its UK pub network.
Net Debt Declines
Net debt at the end of the first quarter stood at £736 million, compared with £756 million at the corresponding point in the previous financial year.
The £20 million reduction comes as the company continues to expand its estate and report positive sales growth.
Labour Costs and Hospitality Industry Pressures
Wetherspoon also highlighted the impact of rising employment costs on the hospitality industry, particularly in comparison with supermarkets.
The company argued that pubs face substantially higher labour costs relative to sales because of the service-intensive nature of their operations.
Using industry estimates, Wetherspoon illustrated that a 10% increase in labour costs could add approximately 17 pence to the cost of serving a pint in a pub, compared with around 1.5 pence for a supermarket.
Chairman Tim Martin also pointed to differences in VAT treatment, with pubs and restaurants generally subject to 20% VAT on food sales, while qualifying supermarket food sales are zero-rated.
The company maintained that these cost differences have contributed to the widening price gap between pub and supermarket purchases.
Full-Year Profit Outlook Maintained
Wetherspoon said trading had started positively, although profitability for the remainder of the financial year will depend on the pace of sales growth.
Chairman Tim Martin confirmed that the company remains comfortable with current market profit expectations after adjusting for the 53-week financial year.
Management will provide further trading updates as the year progresses.
