European stock markets advanced modestly on Wednesday, supported by stronger-than-expected results from Novo Nordisk and a recovery in technology shares, while investors assessed early results from the US midterm elections and awaited fresh eurozone inflation figures.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index gained 0.3%, with Novo Nordisk (TG:NOV) climbing nearly 6% after the Danish pharmaceutical group reported third-quarter adjusted operating profit above market expectations and raised its full-year sales and profit forecasts.

European Indices Record Modest Gains

Major European equity benchmarks traded higher, although gains remained limited amid uncertainty surrounding US political developments and the outlook for monetary policy.

Germany’s DAX increased 0.25%, while France’s CAC 40 advanced 0.3%. London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.4%.

Healthcare stocks provided support following Novo Nordisk’s quarterly results, while technology companies recovered some of the losses recorded earlier in the week.

Investors remained cautious ahead of the eurozone’s preliminary inflation report and further commentary from European Central Bank officials.

Novo Nordisk Shares Jump Following Stronger Earnings

Novo Nordisk (TG:NOV) shares rose nearly 6% after the manufacturer of the weight-loss treatment Wegovy reported adjusted operating profit above analysts’ expectations for the third quarter.

The company also increased its full-year revenue and profit forecasts, providing a positive signal for its financial outlook.

The earnings announcement helped support the broader European healthcare sector and contributed to the STOXX 600’s advance.

Novo Nordisk’s share price performance made the company one of the principal contributors to the market’s gains during the session.

US Midterm Elections Influence Market Sentiment

European investors continued to monitor preliminary results from Tuesday’s US congressional elections, which indicated significant gains for the Democratic Party.

Early vote counts and exit polls suggested that Democrats were making progress in the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate remained closely contested.

The prospect of a Democratic-controlled or divided Congress raised questions about the direction of US trade, fiscal and foreign policy under President Donald Trump.

European companies with substantial exposure to US markets were particularly attentive to the potential implications for tariffs and international trade.

Investors also considered how changes in congressional control could affect American clean-energy incentives, NATO commitments and financial assistance for Ukraine.

However, the eventual policy implications will depend on the final election results and subsequent legislative developments.

Technology Shares Recover Following AMD Results

European technology stocks rebounded after a period of selling pressure, supported by stronger quarterly earnings from US semiconductor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD).

AMD reported robust growth in its data centre business and provided guidance that helped ease concerns about demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The results offered some reassurance following recent volatility in global technology shares.

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) had previously experienced a sharp share price decline of approximately 30%, while Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) warned that higher memory chip costs could affect gross margins during the holiday shopping period.

The developments had contributed to concerns about semiconductor industry profitability and the sustainability of AI-related investment.

European Semiconductor Stocks Stabilise

Several major European technology companies recovered during Wednesday’s trading session.

ASML Holding (EU:ASML), ASM International (EU:ASM), STMicroelectronics (BIT:STMMI), BE Semiconductor Industries (EU:BESI) and Prosus (EU:PRX) recorded gains ranging from approximately 0.3% to 2%.

The rebound reflected improved sentiment towards semiconductor manufacturers, equipment suppliers and technology investment companies.

Nevertheless, investors continued to assess whether strong demand for AI computing infrastructure would translate into sustained earnings growth across the wider technology sector.

Eurozone Inflation Data in Focus

Investors were also preparing for the release of the eurozone’s preliminary harmonised consumer price index (HICP), an important indicator for the European Central Bank’s monetary policy outlook.

The ECB maintained its deposit facility rate at 2.50% at its previous policy meeting, while highlighting the potential inflationary impact of elevated energy costs.

An unexpected increase in headline or services inflation could strengthen expectations of a 25-basis-point interest rate increase at the central bank’s December meeting.

Market participants were also awaiting comments from ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane, scheduled to speak later on Wednesday.

His remarks could provide additional indications of how policymakers are assessing inflation pressures and the outlook for interest rates.

European Market Outlook

European equities remained supported by positive company earnings and a partial recovery in technology shares, although broader gains were restrained by political and monetary policy uncertainty.

Investors will continue to monitor the final outcome of the US midterm elections, particularly the implications for international trade and fiscal policy.

The eurozone inflation report and upcoming ECB commentary are also expected to influence expectations for borrowing costs and the direction of European equity markets.
