CEO Paul Welch outlines the company’s return to profitability, progress across its US portfolio and plans to secure a European gas opportunity by year-end.

Buccaneer Energy (LSE:BUCE) is pursuing growth on two fronts, combining opportunities to increase production from its existing US assets with an ambitious strategy to expand into European gas markets.

In a new episode of The Watch List, CEO Paul Welch discussed the company’s interim results, its priorities for the second half of 2026 and why the European strategy is expected to become a major driver of growth over the next 12 to 24 months.

Return to Profitability Provides Momentum

Buccaneer Energy returned to profitability in the first half of 2026, a result Welch highlighted as particularly encouraging given the challenging commodity pricing environment during the opening months of the period.

With prices recovering as the year progressed, the company delivered a profitable first half while continuing to advance its operational and strategic priorities.

Looking ahead, Welch identified European gas as a central part of Buccaneer’s growth plans, with the company moving quickly to progress opportunities that could broaden its business beyond its established US production portfolio.

European Gas Strategy Opens a New Growth Opportunity

Welch explained that Buccaneer is targeting European gas opportunities that have remained largely untouched for an extended period, applying modern technology to opportunities that could benefit from a fresh approach.

The strategy is underpinned by the prevailing energy pricing environment, with Welch highlighting prices of around $150 per barrel on an energy-equivalent basis as an illustration of the potential value of the market.

The company is now focused on advancing these opportunities, with the ambition of securing at least one European gas opportunity by the end of 2026.

While Welch acknowledged that completing a deal within this timeframe would be challenging, he made clear that the company is pushing hard to achieve this milestone.

Success would give Buccaneer an additional avenue for growth and establish a new strategic dimension alongside its existing US operations.

US Assets Remain Central to Production Growth

Alongside its European ambitions, Buccaneer continues to focus on extracting further value from its existing portfolio.

One of the key operational priorities is production growth from the company’s Fouke waterflood project. Welch confirmed that the area has recently been mapped and that the company is progressing the next steps, including negotiations with its partners.

Waterflood projects can help improve recovery from existing oil reservoirs by injecting water to support reservoir pressure and drive additional oil towards producing wells. The planned work at Fouke therefore represents an important area to watch as Buccaneer seeks to build on its existing production base.

The timing and scale of any resulting production gains will depend on the project’s development and the completion of the necessary partner discussions.

Two Key Milestones for the Second Half of 2026

Welch outlined two broad priorities for the remainder of the year: advancing production growth from Fouke and securing at least one European gas opportunity.

Both initiatives have the potential to contribute to the company’s next phase of development, although they remain subject to operational progress, negotiations and successful execution.

The combination of these priorities reflects Buccaneer’s approach to growth: developing opportunities within its existing US portfolio while pursuing new markets that could expand its future business.

Building the Next Phase of Growth

Buccaneer Energy enters the second half of 2026 with a return to profitability behind it and two clear areas of focus ahead.

Progress at Fouke offers a route to potential production growth from existing assets, while the European gas strategy could provide access to new opportunities in a market Welch believes offers attractive energy pricing.

With the company working towards a year-end milestone for its European expansion, the coming months will be important in determining how quickly these plans translate into tangible operational and commercial progress.

Investors will be watching for further developments across both fronts as Buccaneer seeks to build on its first-half performance and establish the foundations for its next stage of growth.
