Vodafone Group (LSE:VOD) shares declined 3.7% to 119.75 pence on Friday, as investors assessed developments in the telecommunications sector and updated financial targets announced at the company’s VodafoneThree Investor Briefing.

The decline followed news that SpaceX had agreed to acquire a portfolio of low-band wireless spectrum in the United States, a development that has drawn attention to potential changes in competition between satellite communications providers and established mobile network operators.

The transaction has raised questions about the longer-term competitive implications of satellite-based connectivity services for traditional telecommunications businesses, although the direct financial impact on Vodafone remains uncertain.

Vodafone shares also came under pressure following Thursday’s investor briefing, during which the company outlined revised financial and operational objectives for its merged UK mobile business.

The company increased its annual cost savings target for VodafoneThree to £1 billion by the financial year ending 2032, compared with its previous objective of £700 million by the financial year ending 2030.

Vodafone also introduced a target for adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation after leases (EBITDAaL) to grow at a mid-to-high single-digit annual rate through FY2032.

The revised objectives reflect the company’s plans to deliver additional efficiencies and improve profitability following the combination of Vodafone’s UK operations with Three.

Despite the higher savings target and updated earnings outlook, Vodafone shares moved lower during the session.

The decline followed a period of share price gains ahead of the briefing, with profit-taking cited as one possible explanation for the market reaction. However, the extent to which the updated targets had already been reflected in the share price remains unclear.

Separately, Deutsche Bank issued a Buy recommendation on Vodafone on Friday, indicating a more favourable assessment of the company’s risk and return outlook.

The recommendation did not coincide with a recovery in the shares during the reported trading period.

Recent regulatory disclosures also showed that Societe Generale had slightly reduced its voting interest in Vodafone. The change was relatively small, and no direct connection between the filing and Friday’s share price movement has been established.

The decline occurred while the FTSE 100 was trading modestly higher, leaving Vodafone underperforming the broader UK equity market during the session.

Fellow telecommunications operator BT Group has also experienced share price pressure in recent weeks, although no specific development involving BT was identified as a contributor to Vodafone’s decline.

At 119.75 pence, Vodafone shares remained above their reported 52-week low of 83.4 pence.

Investors will continue to assess the company’s ability to achieve its revised VodafoneThree cost savings and earnings objectives, alongside developments in the competitive environment for mobile telecommunications services.

The longer-term implications of SpaceX’s spectrum acquisition and Vodafone’s updated financial targets remain subject to further developments.
